MarineLabs is proud to support Robert Allan Ltd., a world leading naval architecture firm based in Vancouver, Canada, in their continued delivery of excellence in vessel design. Since 1928, Robert Allan Ltd. has set the standard for innovative marine engineering, designing high-performance tugs, sophisticated research vessels, ferries, and more for clients around the globe.
As part of their commitment to precision and performance, Robert Allan Ltd. is drawing on MarineLabs’ coastal intelligence platform to characterize wave-induced motions for tugs that are presently in operation. The resulting dataset will be used to help match future tug designs to their intended operational locations and corresponding sea-states. MarineLabs has supplied historical weather data, gathered over a six-month period, at key sensor locations in the Strait of Georgia and Juan de Fuca Strait. By combining this data with vessel onboard instrumentation, Robert Allan Ltd. will gain a critical reference point to validate their numerical models of the tug’s response to a wide-range of weather conditions.
“MarineLabs data has been instrumental in supporting our R&D efforts to validate the accuracy of our seakeeping models. We’re impressed with the reliability of their systems, the depth and precision of the data, and the exceptional customer service they consistently provide,” said Dr. Michael Shives, CFD Engineer and Ship Simulation Specialist at Robert Allan Ltd. “MarineLabs will continue to be our first choice for both historical and real-time buoy data in future projects.”
Every week, somewhere in the world, at least one new vessel designed by Robert Allan Ltd. enters service—a testament to the firm’s global impact and diverse design portfolio. Their work spans a wide range of vessel types and services, from advanced tugboats for LNG terminal support to high-capacity bunkering barges for lightering operations at strategic ports.
“Robert Allan Ltd. has long set the benchmark in vessel design and marine engineering,” said Dr. Scott Beatty, CEO of MarineLabs. “It’s rewarding to see our historical data play a role in how their team is refining tug performance in challenging real-world conditions in approaches to ports. We’re proud to support their continued innovation with the high-quality, location-specific data that validates their models and informs future tug design.”
The collaboration highlights a shared belief in the power of data to drive better marine outcomes, from design to deployment. With MarineLabs’ extensive high-resolution data, Robert Allan Ltd. can validate performance with confidence, knowing that their instrumentation reflects real-world coastal conditions.
MarineLabs is proud to support visionary firms like Robert Allan Ltd. as they continue to raise the bar in innovative vessel design and marine engineering services.
